This group of irregular verbs is super easy — but very important! These verbs are special because ONLY the first-person singular (yo) form is irregular. All the other forms are completely regular.
To make them easier to learn, we can organize them into three mini-groups:
1. Verbs that don’t follow any specific pattern:
- Dar (to give): doy – das – da – damos – dais – dan.
- Saber (to know – facts, information): sé – sabes – sabe – sabemos – sabéis – saben.
- Ver (to see): veo – ves – ve – vemos – veis – ven.
- Caber (to fit): quepo – cabes – cabe – cabemos – cabéis – caben.
Sé la respuesta correcta. (I know the correct answer.)
Quepo en ese coche pequeño. (I fit in that small car.)
2. Verbs that add a G in the yo form:
- Traer (to bring): traigo – traes – trae – traemos – traéis – traen.
- Caer (to fall): caigo – caes – cae – caemos – caéis – caen.
- Salir (to go out): salgo – sales – sale – salimos – salís – salen.
- Valer (to cost): valgo – vales – vale – valemos – valéis – valen.
- Hacer (to do/make): hago – haces – hace – hacemos – hacéis – hacen.
- Poner (to put): pongo – pones – pone – ponemos – ponéis – ponen.
Salgo con mis amigos los viernes. (I go out with my friends on Fridays.)
Hago mi tarea por la noche. (I do my homework at night.)
3. All verbs that end in -OCER, -ECER, and -UCIR usually add a Z in the yo form:
- Conocer (to know — people/places): conozco – conoces – conoce – conocemos – conocéis – conocen.
- Ofrecer (to offer): ofrezco – ofreces – ofrece – ofrecemos – ofrecéis – ofrecen.
- Traducir (I translate): traduzco – traduces – traduce – traducimos – traducís – traducen.
Conozco muy bien esta ciudad. (I know this city very well.)
